Safety-isolated CAN-FD transceiver brings high data rate to industrial applications

To meet the demand for speed, functionality, isolation and performance in industrial and building automation, power systems and defense and avionics networks, Analog Devices has expanded its transceiver range for CAN-FD applications.

With its maximum data transfer rate of 12 Mbps, the ADM3055E series of galvanically isolated iCoupler digital isolator ICs exceed the industry standards (5 Mbps) significantly. Thus they are prepared for future requirements without sacrificing unrestricted downward compatibility with existing CAN and CAN-FD designs. The ADM3055E series with enhanced isolation also features a new low noise isolated isoPower DC-DC converter and increased ruggedness, facilitating design-in and enabling the rapid launch of CAN nodes with full safety isolation.

With the ADM3055E CAN-FD Series, designers can achieve higher data rates and longer cable lengths thanks to shorter loop times of up to 150 ns and an extended common mode range. An integrated isolated DC-DC converter eliminates the need for a separate power supply for the isolated side of the bus. The high level of integration offered here, combined with the ease of obtaining noise emission and ESD certifications and an integrated isolated power supply, allows designers to reduce development costs, board space requirements and overall solution dimensions without the restrictions of existing isolated products and solutions.

Additional versions with lower insulation values will soon be available.

Product highlights of the ADM3055E series include:

  • Compliance with emission standards EN 55022/CISPR 22 Class B on a two-layer printed circuit board
  • ESD resistance according to IEC61000-4-2 Level 4 (±8 kV contact discharge and ±15 kV air discharge)
  • Bus error protection up to ±40 V at the CAN bus pins
  • ±25 V Common mode range
  • Logic-side VCC of 5 V with insulation-side VIO options for supply voltages of 1.8 V, 2.5 V, 3.3 V and 5.0 V
